1. What price should I ask for a PonkTV system?

The price you ask and sell the system hardware is up to you. The same for any installation or future maintenance services you provide. However, the PonkTV Software and the software packages installed with a PonkTV System are generally open source. A standard rule of thumb for open source software is that you may only sell the software for the cost of distribution.

2. What on-site configuration is needed?

PonkTV is an Internet application and is recommended to be installed behind a firewall. PonkTV basic operations do not need any on-site firewall configuration. However; to allow advanced options to operate and to get the best performance the on-site firewall should be configured. Configuration simply involves opening TCP/UDP ports used by PonkTV installed software. Please consult the PonkTV User Guide for further information.

3. What Hardware is required for PonkTV?

PonkTV is developed to run on a low-cost AMD processor based Wal-Mart PC. Review the specifications on a low-cost Wal-Mart PC for a set of current basic hardware requirements for PonkTV. PonkTV does not require a mouse, keyboard, speakers, or a monitor.

In addition to the basic computer system you need:

  • nVidia compatible graphics card with TV OUT (AGP recommended).
  • IRMAN infrared receiver.

View Hardware for more information.

4. How do I get the PonkTV software?

See the PonkTV Download page.

5. What should be included with a PonkTV System?

You should include the PonkTV Install and Package CDs. The PonkTV Install CD is all that is needed to reinstall and configure PonkTV.

6. What is the licensing for PonkTV CDs?

The PonkTV system/CDs uses several software packages under various licenses. PonkTV is a Linux distro which allows for copying and distribution. Review the PonkTV licensing page for further information.

7. I want to add my own Logo to the PonkTV screen?

You can add a custom logo on the PonkTV screen. Space has been left on the upper right corner of the screen for a custom logo. See the developers FAQ for more information.

8. I want to use different hardware can these changes be made?

The PonkTV developers FAQ gives hints on how other hardware devices, such as graphics cards or IR receivers, can be configured. Also PonkTV is based on the Linux operating system and can be custom configured easily with different hardware after installation.

9. Is there a faster way to install PonkTV?

You can use a developers install option in the PonkTV makefile, makefile-ponktv, to install a non-configured PonkTV. After configuration you can make a disk image which can be directly copied.

10. Can I create and distribute my own computer videos?

This is what PonkTV is all about. Letting people distribute their content without enormous cost of broadcasting or Internet bandwidth. Use your expertise in your own promotional TV show and distribute it with PonkTV.
